Volunteer

Each year, over 15,000 hours of legal services, with an estimated value of over $6 million, are donated by over 400 lawyers throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area to the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. We promote a culture of voluntarism, and the pro bono coordinators across our member law firms establish systems of mentoring to encourage new associates and first time volunteers to get involved. Our volunteers often begin at stages of low buy in, such as brief service at TLP's Solution Station or through the Settlement Assistance Program, then come back for more work-intensive assignments and refer others from their law firm to volunteer as well.

To that effect, the Chicago Lawyers' Committee puts significant effort into training the private Bar, including lawyers, recent JDs, law students, and undergraduates that have an eye to civil rights law, to better preserve, protect and champion civil rights. We have adopted an inclusive policy to welcoming new law firms to the Committee, and welcome new volunteers through trainings posted to Illinois Legal Aid Online.

We have also developed a program welcoming in full time volunteers to the Lawyer's Committee. We believe that investing in young professionals interested in civil rights and community development law will, in turn, cultivate long term
commitment to civil rights and community development law across the private bar.. The Chicago Lawyers' Committee is currently seeking Civil Rights Interns and Civil Rights Fellows for our Fall Cycle. Please send a cover letter, resume and one-paragraph professional biography to opportunities@clccrul.org if you are interested in any of these positions.
